If Bill thinks search advertising is worth £25bn shouldn't you be exploiting it?

The high profile news reporting of Microsoft's $44.6 billion (£23bn) bid for Yahoo! (see Economist 7th February Microsoft v Google) has not only highlighted the enormous growth of online advertising, but also the importance of online advertising to businesses of all sizes, throughout the world.

It is almost beyond argument that businesses which aren't using online marketing are missing out. Perhaps just as important, however, are the huge amount of businesses, large and small, who aren't using online marketing effectively.

Possibly due to this spotlight on paid advertising, we have had a massive number of enquiries so far this year, from both large and small companies, seeking professional management of their PPC campaigns. It's maybe because Google, Yahoo and Microsoft strongly promote the simplicity and ease of their services that Paid search has acquired a perception that any fool can do it. I suppose its like cooking, painting or undertaking medical surgery. On the face of it, it's quite straightforward.

It might only take a surgeon minutes to remove your appendix but it took them over seven years to gain the skills to do it. Picasso, when challenged how he could justify charging thousands for a drawing that took him only seconds to complete, claimed that the drawing didn't take seconds; it took him a lifetime to learn how.
